The deaths have come amid rising concerns about a surge in violent knife crime over the summer.

A 15-year old boy in Woolwich and a 16-year old boy in Lambeth have been pronounced dead after fatal stabbings in South London on Monday evening.

The 15-year old boy died in Woolwich New Road after violence erupted in a busy area near Woolwich Arsenal station.

Pictures on social media showed members of the public holding up sheets to provide privacy as ambulance crews tried to save the boy’s life.

Another 15-year old later took himself to hospital suffering from a knife wound, and has since been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 16-year-old boy was also pronounced dead after being found injured in Oval Place in Lambeth at around 11.45pm.

Police were positioned at two separate cordons on Tuesday near the site of the stabbing. A tarpaulin sheet covered the stairwell at Elworth House, a block of flats just off the main Clapham Road.

Police Superintendent Petra Lazar said of the Woolwich incident that “increased patrols will be carried out in the area over the next few days”.

Surge in violent knife crime

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said that he was “heartbroken and appalled” by the deaths. He also said that he was in “close contact” with Met Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick as her officers investigate the stabbings.

The deaths have come amid rising concerns about a surge in violent knife crime over the summer.

The Met Police launched a crackdown on knife crime in the capital in April, called Operation Sceptre, in response to the concerns.

It included deploying knife arches and sniffer dogs, as well as encouraging the public to hand in weapons.
