Speaking outside the Royal Courts of Justice on the second day of Wikileaks founder Assange’s extradition hearing, MP Jeremy Corbyn has demanded his release, and said that the case demands more attention from the British press.
Former Labour Party leader, Corbyn has called on the High Court to reject the US appeal, whilst calling the WikiLeaks founder a “truth teller” who should be allowed to continue his life’s work.
A decade in limbo
Mr. Assange, 50, is wanted in the US over his publication of thousands of classified documents in 2010 and 2011 and has spent much of the past decade in confinement. First at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, and since 2019 in Belmarsh Prison.
A legal appeal started under former US President Donald Trump has continued during the Joe Biden presidency and began its second day of proceedings today.

“This is a major human rights issue”
Corbyn said that the case was of global significance and was critical of the British media for their lack of coverage of the hearing. He says that the treatment of Assange has amounted to a “major human rights issue” whilst criticising the lack of attention on the issue in the U.K.
In yesterday’s hearing the High Court learned that the judge who blocked Mr Assange’s extradition in January of this year was misled by his psychiatrist.
The trial continues.
