Eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters are tackling the fire on the 18th floor of a block of flats in south London.

The London Fire Brigade arrived at the scene shortly after 11am on Thursday.

Thick smoke and flames can be seen pouring out of the 18th floor windows.

Station Commander Dave Hill says “Firefighters are making steady progress at the scene of the fire in Elephant and Castle”

 

“Road closures are in place and we encourage people to avoid the area”

The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
