A rise in coronavirus cases after Christmas is expected, with experts urging people to be cautious over the festive season.

New data released from the ZOE COVID Study app shows that coronavirus cases are similar to what they were in January last year.

“It is clear that children and school holidays [will] play a key role in the waves of infection” Professor at King’s College London and lead scientist on the app, Tim Spector has said.

Mr Spector argues it is likely the UK will live with coronavirus for the next five years. Therefore, he is asking people to think forward instead of just trying to save Christmas.

Despite calls from the NHS to be cautious, Professor Spector says he is “cautiously optimistic” for the festive season. A rise in cases is expected in 2022 as adults and children return to school after the holidays.

Healthy behaviours such as working more from home when possible and self-isolation with all symptoms are highly recommended. This is in addition to wearing face coverings in crowded places.

The Zoe study has found that that cases have reduced in  people who have had at least two jabs of the Covid-19 vaccine.

There are currently 22,482 new daily symptomatic cases in the UK, down 9% from 24,766.

Cases among the 18- 74 group have levelled off and there is a decline in those ages 75 and over.
