Pop star Britney Spears has been arrested in California, according to records from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office.

US celebrity news website TMZ reported that the 90’s pop princess was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Arrest records show the Toxic singer, 44, was arrested on March 5. She was given a booking number after being taken into custody. Her arrest comes after she sold part of her rights to her back catalogue in February to music publisher Primary Wave for an unknown fee.

The purchase came after Spears’ 13-year conservatorship, set up in 2008, which had control of her career decisions and finances, ended in 2021.

After regaining control of her career, Spears released a collaboration with Sir Elton John in 2022, and later collaborated with Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am on a track titled Mind Your Business in 2023.

According to TMZ, Spears was arrested at around 9.30pm local time. She was later detained by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department at approximately 3am.

The singer was released from jail at around 6am the same morning.

The singer has previously faced driving-related controversy.

In 2007, the Mississippi-born performer avoided a criminal hit-and-run trial after agreeing to pay for damage caused when photographers captured her car striking another vehicle while she attempted to park in a California car park. Images from the incident showed Spears checking her own vehicle before leaving the scene.
