One of London’s leading queer venues has decided to permanently shut its doors
In a statement posted on The Glory’s Instagram page yesterday, the venue said it “Simply can’t continue to operate” as it would like as its building is being redeveloped.
The venue, which hosts a variety of events such as drag shows and club nights, has operated in East London for nine years. Its building on the corner of Orsman Road and Kingsland Road was originally built in 1800.
This is not the first queer venue to recently announce a closure. Last month, Soho venue G-A-Y said it would close in December due to safety concerns.
In reaction to the statement, actor Ross Mullan, voice of the title character in former children’s’ TV programme Bear Behaving Badly, commented “It was an awesome venue but brilliant to hear you have a new venue”.
‘Bid farewell to this legendary venue’
The venue state that they will continue to organise events right up until the closure date. These range from stand-up comedy evenings and music performances to arts and crafts evening and its annual ‘Big Gay Carol Service’.
There is still over a month until the venue plans to close. At the moment, it is unclear as to where The Glory will relocate and reopen its doors in the Spring.
