Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Claire Mann, who is currently Managing Director of South Western Railway (SWR), has been appointed TfL’s Chief Operating Officer.
The new COO will inherit a large in-tray including the handling of the disruption caused by major Aslef strikes and the increased crime alongside staff harassment on the London Underground. These were announced in the run-up to Christmas.
In Ms Mann’s previous role as a managing director at SWR, she led a business with an annual turnover of £770m. This comprised of 5,500 colleagues and running more than 1,500 train services a day.
Ms Mann adapted the business to a post-pandemic environment and steered SWR to becoming the first Train Operating Company to launch a roadmap to Net Zero by 2040. She also oversaw the introduction of a £1bn fleet of new SWR trains.
At TfL, Ms Mann will be second in command to Andy Lord, London’s Transport Commissioner. He states, “Claire’s customer focus and wide-ranging public transport industry background will play a vital role in our work.”
“We are delighted to have her return to TfL in this key leadership position.”
Ms Mann had previously been director of buses at TfL before joining South Western in 2021. She will re-join the capital’s public transport operator next March.
Ms Mann began her career as a driver on the Heathrow Express and is highly regarded in the transport industry.
Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill, chairman of Network Rail and a former TfL commissioner, said, “It’s fantastic, and brilliant news for London. She is just so competent.”
