Roman Abramovich’s pledge to donate funds raised in the sale of Chelsea remains “unfulfilled” according to a parliamentary watchdog.
The Russian oligarch and former Belgravia resident was forced to sell the West London football club in 2022 for £2.5 billion, after being found to have enabled Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Abramovich reached an agreement with the UK government to donate the proceeds of the sale to causes benefiting Ukrainians. As of yet, no money has been donated.
The House of Lords European Affairs Committee have criticised both the former Chelsea owner and the Government, saying the “failure …reflects poorly” on both parties.
Former national security adviser Lord Rickets, who chaired the committee, praised the Government’s response to Russia’s aggression in general, saying it should be “commended”, but added that it was “incomprehensible” that Ukraine still had not received any money from Abramovich.
