Heavy rain could affect journey times in London, slowing down the commuters across the capital.

The Met Office has issued a yellow rain warning for London, saying that flooding of homes and businesses is possible.

The alert has been in place since 02:00 on Thursday and remains in place until 06:00 on Friday.

The Met Office have said to expect the flooding of a “few homes and businesses”. They also warned that London road and rail journeys could take longer.

Spray and flooding on roads will also slow traffic and likely impact commuters tonight and early on Friday.

The alert covers the whole of the South of England, including London, so travel to and from the capital could also be disrupted.

The Met Office have issued five tips for staying safe during a yellow rain warning:

  • Check if your property is at risk of flooding
  • Stay safe during flooding
  • Check if it’s safe to drive, and if you must:
    • Slow down
    • Use main roads
    • Use dipped headlights
    • Give yourself more time to react on slippery surfaces
    • Leave a bigger gap between vehicles
  • Don’t drive walk or swim through floodwater
  • Help protect vulnerable people you know

Weather conditions are forecast to improve during the weekend, but light showers will persist.

Temperatures are also expected to drop early next week reaching lows of minus two.
