It’s “unforgiveable” what happened to Post Office subpostmasters says former Post Office head Paula Vennells, as she continues giving evidence to Post Office inquiry.
Ms Vennells has told the Horizon IT Inquiry there are “no words” that will make the “sorrow and what people have gone through any better”.
Giving evidence for a third day, the former chief executive was asked by Edward Henry KC, representing a number of subpostmasters: “There were so many forks in the road but you always took the wrong path didn’t you?”
Paula Vennells has agreed she had “no one to blame” but herself for what happened during the Post Office’s Horizon scandal. Speaking to the inquiry yesterday, she expressed remorse about the scandal, breaking down in tears during her statement.
Reflecting on her time in charge, she told the inquiry this morning she should have asked software giant Fujitsu for reassurances that problems with its Horizon software had been dealt with when given the ‘world-changing information’ there were bugs in the system.
Ms Vennells was chief executive of the Post Office between 2012 and 2019.
