An additional 15 CCTV cameras are to be installed at bus stops across London to improve the safety of women and girls, following Transport for London (TfL)’s first trial in March.
The new locations include Brent, Croydon, Hackney, Hammersmith, Fulham and Westminster, bringing the total number of sites to 20.
According to TfL, the new CCTV cameras are being installed in “locations where women and girls have reported feeling more unsafe”.
“We want women and girls to be safe and feel safe, and for the TfL network to be a beacon of safety for everyone, day and night”.
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement
The Metropolitan Police will be able to access live feeds from these cameras, and the recordings will be retained after 31 days.
Passenger groups welcome more CCTV cameras at bus stops
A spokesperson for passenger campaign group London TravelWatch expressed their concern over the safety of women and girls on public transport in the capital, and welcomed the expansion of this trial.
“We know from our research that bus stops – especially at night – can feel unsafe so this trial is really important.
A spokesperson for London TravelWatch
“It will hopefully enable passengers to feel more confident when travelling by bus, and make it easier for the Metropolitan Police to investigate crimes and respond to any incidents”.
This initiative is part of a broader effort from TfL to enhance safety and security for women and girls on the public transport in London.
“This is one of many measures we are putting in place, alongside our work with the Met and BTP, to improve the safety and security of people travelling on public transport”
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement.
