Chelsea striker Sam Kerr tells Court police treated her differently because of the colour of her skin
The footballer is appearing at Kingston Crown Court today as she’s charged with causing racially aggravated harassment to a police officer.
She said she feared for her life as her and her partner, the West Ham midfielder Kristie Mewis, was ‘trapped’ in a taxi. The taxi driver then drove them to a police station after one of them smashed the car window.
Sam Kerr is now charged with racially abusing a white police officer for smashing the car window.
Her partner, Kristie Mewis, was crying as she described the ‘very scary’ incident to the Court.
Kristie Mewis told Court she “feared for her life”
“I’ve never driven a car that fast before. I immediately felt fear for my life.
“I felt out of control and like someone else had control over me and that was obviously very scary… I didn’t know if it was a kidnapping or if we were going to crash. – Kristie Mewis
The taxi driver said the two women refused to pay clean-up costs after one of them was sick. It is alleged that they had been drinking before taking the taxi, and that the Australian player called a police officer ‘stupid and white’ at the police station.
The football player, who’s part of the Women Super League, is being charged with racially aggravated harassment to Pc Stephen Lovell, during an incident in south-west London in January 30th 2023.
Asked if she meant ‘whiteness as an insult’, Sam Kerr denied:
“No, that’s not what I meant,” said Sam Kerr “I believed it was him using his power and privilege over me because he was accusing me of being something I’m not … I was trying to express that due to the power and privilege they had they would never have to understand what we had just gone through and the fear we were having for our lives.” – Sam Kerr
Sam Kerr also told the Court she thinks she was treated differently than her partner.
