People gather outside St James' Palace for King Charles III's proclamation as monarch.

St James’ Palace will be open to the public this April and May for the first time in it’s 500 year history.

Tickets went on sale this week as the public for the price of £85 for adults and have already sold out.

A spokesperson from Republic, a pressure group, has raised concerns over whether the cost of the tours are fair to the public:

“Places like St James’ Palace, Buckingham palace etc really they’re owned by us, they’re owned by the government and they should be accessible.”

How does the price compare to other Royal Palaces?

The public can visit Buckingham Palace for as little as £32 per adult. Hampton Court, Henry VIII’s former residence, allows people in for £28 and it costs £31 to look inside Windsor Castle. These are all at least £50 less than the cheapest ticket to see inside St James’.

The tour will offer an insight into royal life as well as allowing the public to see the very room where monarch’s including King Charles III and Elizabeth II ascended to the throne.

One Londoner told City News that £85 is “excessive” whilst another said that they “wouldn’t pay that much for a palace”.

Former presenter of Question Time David Dimbleby joked that “I’ve been there – so I don’t think I’d pay an extra £85 to go in.”

A spokesperson from the Royal Collection Trust told City News: “prices are benchmarked across the sector and reflect the unique and special access visitors will experience.”

The first tour will take place on 11th April.
