E-scooters have proven popular with Londoners, according to TfL statistics.

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that a third of London’s boroughs now host e-scooter trials, with Wandsworth being the latest to join the scheme.
The trial began in 2021, and since then, the scheme has seen a huge expansion, and it now covers 300 kilometres squared of the city.
The addition of Wandsworth contributes 35 kilometres squared, in addition to an extra 170 parking bays to the trial area.
The trial is run by TfL in collaboration with operators Voi and Lime, and it offers the only legal way to ride an electric scooter on the roads of the capital.
Private e-scooters not included in the trial are illegal as they do not have to abide by safety regulations. The scooters included in the trial have to adhere to standards such as a 12.5mph speed limit and the need to always have lights on, according to TfL.
The London trial, authorised by the Department for Transport (DfT), is set to run up to September 2025. The capital hosts one of the largest of the trials nationwide, and boasts a pool of over 4,000 vehicles.
Demand for the scooters is also increasing according to data from TfL, with the number of customers taking more than one ride increasing by 27%. In addition, 7% of journeys now replace car trips.
According to TfL’s data, no fatalities have been recorded during the trial, and 0.0004% of trips have resulted in serious injury.
Helen Sharp, TfL’s e-scooter trial lead, said that they are “really pleased to be able to extend the e-scooter trial to November” and that TfL are “working closely with operators, councils and people across London to build on the success of the trial so far and we’re pleased that people will continue to benefit until the autumn.”
Will Norman, London’s Walking & Cycling Commissioner added that “ensuring a green, sustainable future for London is a top priority – with the right regulations that prioritise safety, e-scooters are an alternative to cars that could help us get there.”
