Road works in City of London borough are taking over.

City of London has the worst road works in relation to its population than any other part of the UK.
According to the Blackcircles data, Westminster has the worst road works and is ranked at first place. Westminster Council delivered 18,123 repairs in 2024 alone.
Taking second place is Southwark, where drivers in 2024 had to deal with a total of 8,941 roadworks.
However, City of London, which has officially been ranked third for the highest concentration of roadworks, had 8,226 works in 2024. In other words that is 6,111 road works for every 10,000 people.
This follows concerns earlier in March, where emergency powers were allegedly being used to carry out maintenance work with little or no notice in some instances such as gas leaks or a burst water pipes.
MPs on the Transport Committee are in the process of conducting an inquiry into the work carried out by utilities companies to install, fix or maintain services such as broadband or water.

What does this for Londoners?
Keith McNally, from the Confederation of Passenger Transport which represents bus operators, said he felt that these powers had the potential to be used for non-emergencies, causing widespread disruptions for bus drivers and delaying services for everyone.
Buses struggle to divert to alternate routes because they have to collect passengers at specific bus stops which may be blocked by roadworks.
According to the the Transport Committee, 200 different organisations had been given the rights to open up road surfaces and undergo road works.
