As the Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, organisers have updated this year’s dress code to include a ban on naked dressing.

Organisers recently updated their “best practices” to stop the trend of nudity on the red carpet. A style trend we have seen increase in recent years.  Sheer dresses and voluminous outfits that could hinder other guests ability to walk the red carpet will be “strictly prohibited for decency reasons”.

In 2024, Bella Hadid grabbed the spotlight when she attended the festival in a sheer brown Saint Laurent halter-neck gown and supermodel Irina Shayk also made headlines in 2023 when she opted for a completely sheer dress exposing her Gucci lingerie.

As A-listers from across the globe prepare to ascend the stairs of the Grand Auditorium Lumiere, can we expect to see an entourage of pared back, traditional gowns. Or will there be a few rebellious Red carpet rule breakers?

A History of Naked Dressing

1930’s – the term ‘naked dress’ first arose in the 1930s with the introduction of gowns made of translucent fabrics and strapless dresses which were deemed to look bare to people back then.

1962’s – naked dress became more mainstream after Marilyn Monroe wore a flesh-coloured dress when she sung Happy Birthday to President Kennedy. Her dress was apparently so tight, she had to be sewn into it.

1993 – Kate Moss stepped out in a sheer metallic dress, it was a game changer.
