A video has emerged of a significant fly-tipping  operation in Barking, pressuring the council to act on growing rubbish piles.

The post, uploaded to Reddit last week, showed vans tipping piles of rubbish and driving away in a car park near Tesco Extra on Highbridge Road.

It sparked outrage online, with one user commenting: “It’s been going on for ages. A tiny number of quite well known people can cause incredible amounts of unpleasantness for a lot of people & the authorities don’t do anything.”

Barking and Dagenham Council released a statement, which said that they were made aware that “two individuals were opening the security gates to the land allowing others to dump waste unlawfully.”

“On being alerted of the incident our enforcement team took swift action and the individuals were removed and the site was secured within hours.”

“An Enforcement Notice has been issued to the landowner, requiring them to clear the waste within 21 days and secure the site to prevent it happening again.”

When City News arrived on Wednesday morning, the site on Highbury Road had been locked off, with a security guard stationed within the fence.

Huge piles of litter, including what seemed to be construction waste, were still scattered all over the car park.

The leader of Barking and Dagenham Council Dominic Twomey stated on Facebook that “this was clearly organised criminal activity.”

He also said that because it is “private land, the council does not have a direct responsibility to clear it,” though he said he is in contact with the Police about the case.

Facebook Post from Councillor

The Metropolitan Police Service refused to comment on whether any investigation into the fly-tipping operation had been conducted.

Some comments on Councillor Twomey’s post seemed to reflect anger felt by the community, with one resident stating that “this is the filthiest, dirtiest borough in London. Bags and bags of filth everywhere. A pigsty. Fly tipping is not dealt with”.

Another commenter raged: “I live in Lancaster Avenue quiet cul de sac in Barking. Constant fly tipping. I have bags of rubbish dumped opposite my house. I ask the refuse staff to take they refused”.

In response to this online anger, City News asked local residents whether they thought fly-tipping was an issue in Barking.

One local woman, Shadeen, said: “It’s a very big problem [here].”

“You can walk out of your house and just see a mattress, a dressing table, literally from your doorstep”.

When asked whether the council were doing a good job dealing with illegal littering, she said: “I would say the council’s trying… but I think they could do more”.

When we visited the high street, it was a similar story.

Another local woman, Anna, said she sees litter dumped in the streets “A lot, especially after markets”.

We asked if she thought the council were quick to clean the high street, and she said: “They are, they have collectors… I think they invest a lot [of money]”.

Barking and Dagenham council stated that “stopping fly-tipping is a priority for the council and we want to thank those residents who alerted us to this incident and encourage more people to report fly-tipping.”

What is certain is that Barking and Dagenham council have a fight on their hands when it comes to tackling criminal fly-tippers.
