Ex-Scotland Yard detective Jon Wedger has slammed the Metropolitan Police for suppressing cases of child sexual exploitation in London, claiming “they massively covered it up. Of course they covered it up”.
Mr Wedger left the Met in 2017 after 25 years on the force and became a whistle-blower on child abuse.
Mr Wedger claims there are multiple reasons why children may have fallen through the gaps.
“There are three strands of ineptitude and malfeasance. Initially you have incompetence, you have laziness – and that is endemic in the police… but overarching all of that is corruption”.
This comes as the Met announces it will review 9,000 child exploitation cases from the last 15 years.
Public figures including Nigel Farage have accused both the Met and London Mayor Sadiq Khan of “denying… the last great grooming scandal to be uncovered”.
Sadiq Khan and Met commissioner Mark Rowley have both previously denied the presence of grooming gangs in London.
The Mayor was questioned repeatedly about grooming gangs earlier this year, but stated that the situation in London is primarily about “county lines”.
The decision to revisit cases followed a recommendation in Baroness Casey’s review into grooming gangs.
Met commissioner Mark Rowley has walked back previous statements that there was not a “significant problem”, and last week confirmed that there are “several live investigations”.
Jon Wedger said he is pleased to see the reversal and decision to revisit cases: “He has done a U-turn and do you know what? God bless him for that, because at least sex crimes against kids will get looked at”.
Sadiq Khan said in June that, if individuals in politics and law enforcement were found to be complicit in failing victims, he would “absolutely” support the prosecution of those individuals.
We have approached the Met for comment.
