A new left-wing community campaign in Brixton is inviting residents  ”To stop Reform and Remake the UK” by challenging the council by standing in May’s local elections.

‘Fed up with Lambeth council? – Let’s put our own independent candidate!” reads one poster.

Lambeth council has been criticised in the media recently for a ‘lack of money management’ and ‘intimidating’ homeless families.

The campaign called ‘shake it up’ aims to challenge mainstream party politics, ‘taking power out of closed rooms’, and giving it back to the residents of Lambeth.

The campaign began last week in the Brixton Acne Lane ward, and will launch this Thursday in Brixton Hill.

With the Reform party leading the prediction polls with 24%, Shake It Up says it takes hope to build on the successes of the progressive left in Germany and the New York mayoral election.

On their brightly coloured website, you can nominate yourself or others to become a councillor, with a simple click.

But do Lambeth residents really stand a chance of winning a seat?

Currently, there are 60 Labour councillors and four Green councillors. To win, they would need 15,000 votes.

In a memo sent to members of a group chat, organisers say they hope to work with the Green Party to wipe out Labour in Lambeth. This is possible, they believe, with Labour polling 19% country-wide.

We have approached Lambeth Council for comment.

The local council elections take place on May 7th.
