Labour will hold onto just two out of its 21 councils in London in May, according to polling by Bombe on behalf of The Guardian. PM Sir Keir Starmer’s Camden constituency is among those expected to fall to the Green Party at the local elections.

The Greens are projected to make the most gains, going from controlling zero councils to nine.

Lifelong Labour-voter Elizabeth told City News she plans to vote Green in May because of the party’s pledge to halt gentrification in her home borough Hammersmith. Other voters like Maina, who has lived in Islington her whole life, said Labour’s position on Gaza has deterred her from voting for them again.

The Greens aren’t the only party hoping to cash in on Labour’s apparent identity crisis. The Tories are projected to go from five councils to six, vying to win Barnet. Reform is also expected to make gains in outer London, including in areas like Barking and Dagenham.

Although the results of the local elections won’t have a direct impact on the government, they will be an important indicator on London’s current political climate.

If these polls correctly predict what will happen in London this May, alarm bells will be ringing for Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
