Happy St Patrick’s Day from City News! To celebrate today [along with a few too many pints of Guinness] here’s a list of some Irish icons that also call London their home.

1. Jessie Buckley

It would be rude not to start with the ‘Hamnet’ star after her fantastic win on Sunday evening. The Oscar winning actress was born in Killarney but is now based in North London.

2. Graham Norton

The charismatic chat show host who’s been glued to our screens since 2007 comes from County Cork. The 5 time BAFTA winner has worked and lived in East London for decades, saying the capital gave him freedom to express himself and his sexuality in his early career.

3. Oscar Wilde

An oldie but a goldie! The famous writer was born in Dublin in 1854, becoming one of the most influential playwrights in London in the 1890s. The influence of his work is still seen today with the National Theatre producing an adaptation of his work ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ earlier this year.

4. Terry Wogan

The national treasure was the voice of the BBC in the 1990s. Born in Limerick, Wogan is remembered for his chat show ‘Wake Up to Wogan’ and charity work with ‘Children in Need’. He received an OBE in 1997 for his services to broadcasting. Wogan worked in central London at BBC Broadcasting House from 1966 and it doesn’t get more central than that!

5. Sinéad O’Connor

The singer songwriter from Dublin, well-known for her top hits like ‘Nothing Compares to You’ and ‘Mandinka’, topped the charts worldwide throughout her career. She lived in South London and left a powerful legacy with her activism work and fearless truth telling. She passed away in Brixton 2023.
