Footage appearing to show a Met Police officer smashing a car windscreen has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The attack was filmed when the driver of the car refused to get out of the vehicle in Camden, north London.

The policeman and a second officer have been placed on restricted duties.

The IPCC has announced it is assessing whether to independently investigate the incident or supervise a Scotland Yard professional standards probe.

The incident, which took place at 17:00 BST on Friday, was circulated on social media on Saturday.

Leon Fontana, 25, told the Press Association he was the driver and the person who filmed the footage.

A Met Police statement on Sunday said: “Although the investigation is in its early stages, it has been established that the officers stopped the vehicle based on information relating to a man who is of interest to police.

“On conclusion of the incident, the officers identified that the driver was not the man in question and he was not arrested.”
