You could soon be paying more for your pint, after London councils announced five year rate rises for pubs which are well above the national average.

Rates are due to rise by 9.2% nationally, but in London that rises to 29%, with Camden rates going up by 40%.

Graham Scott manages the Duke of Hamilton pub in Hampstead. “The rates from this pub are going up by 50%. Ultimately that’s money that could be going into somebody’s pocket going into somebody else’s.”

The pub will have no option but to raise the price of drinks or take difficult decisions about their future, and they’re not alone with 10 pubs in London closing every day on average. The price of a pint in London is already 82p above the rest of the country on average.

Camden Council had nobody available for comment, but said on their website that the level of rates each pub must pay is related to the value of the pub and is calculated annually each year.
