The London Met investigating the escape of two prisoners form Pentonville Prison, Matthew Baker and James Whitlock, say the men may have had significant help from allies outside the prison.

The two prisoners were both serving long sentences, yet managed to escape on Monday by placing pillows under their bed sheets to fool guards they were still in bed, and diamond-tipped cutting equipment to break through cell bars before climbing over the wall. The incident has drawn public attention to the serious understaffing of prisons throughout the UK.

Retired Metropolitan police officer – Peter Kirkham – told City News that the Police will be looking closely at the pairs friends and family.

They’ll also be urgently working to ensure the safety of witnesses who helped convict them.
