Archaeologists in Shoreditch are excavating what is believed to be the theatre where Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was first performed.
The site of The Curtain Theatre is undergoing a three month investigation and has revealed a secret underground passage beneath the stage and a rudimentary sound system. Other finds include coloured glass beads from costumes and clay pipes used for smoking.
Archaeologists also found that the stage itself was much longer than they were expecting, suggesting that Shakespeare may have written scenes to make use of the unusual amount space available to actors.
The excavated stage will form the centre of a new high-rise development of housing and retail units. There are plans to make the stage accessible for the public to visit and for use as a performance space.
