The borough of Haringey will begin plans to resettle their first Syrian refugees family, it has been announced this week.
The council’s decision comes after a petition signed by nearly 2,700 people was delivered to the Council by Refugees Welcome Haringey. The community letter was also signed by twenty local businesses and organisations.
Over 1,340 pledges have been made to welcome refugees when they arrive from residents, politicians and organisations living and working in Haringey.
As part of the governments Vulnerable People Relocation scheme, the council here have announced they will rehouse Syrian refugees across the borough. This comes almost a hundred years after Alexandra Palace in Haringey housed Belgian refugees fleeing the german invasion.
The Syrian refugees are some of the first children to be rehoused in London under the Vunerable Persons act though London began rehousing refugees back in 2015. Other boroughs like Camden and Islington have already begun to rehouse refugees but Haringey was slow to get involved.
The announcement is welcomed in the community but the council remain tentative about their commitments. They have only said they will rehouse ‘as soon as possible’ and no formal submission has been made to the home office.
Although any definite plans are yet to be announced the council’s decision was applauded by residents on social media. The borough of Haringey looks forward to joining the likes of Camden, Barnet, and Islington to welcome syrian refugees into their community.
