Barnet council has announced it will be planting 48 new cherry trees in Watling Park in Burnt Oak.
Helen Monger, Director of London Parks and Gardens trust has praised Barnet Council for investing in London’s parks but warns that other parks are still being neglected.
The planting will include one avenue of 34 white flowering cherries and one avenue of pink flowering cherries. These will produce an avenue of spring flowers between March and May. The mixed planting of Silver Birch, which will later be under planted with spring bulbs provides various bark interest and autumn foliage to contrast the winter and add a new shade to the scenery as we move into summer.
The council also plans to plant two laburnum trees either side of the entrance gate opposite the park.
As well as the two avenues, a Birch Arboretum was created which displays a variety of unusual Birch trees from around the world. The species were planted in three groups of three.
The first group include: – Betula pendula Tristis, Betula pubescens, Betula pendula ‘purpurea’
The second group include: – Betula pendula dalecarlica, Betula papifera, Betula papifera
The third group include: – Betula maximowicziana, Betula lenta, betula jacquemontii
