London’s second tallest building has been given the go-ahead.
The developers of 22 Bishopsgate had said they would need to rethink their plans if the UK voted to leave the European Union. They said this week that building work would now continue.
The building will have enough room for twelve thousand people to work, will stretch over sixty seven floors, and will include restaurants, retail outlets and viewing galleries as well as offices.
The Shard is London’s tallest building at just over 300 metres. 22 Bishopsgate will measure 278 metres.
Not everyone is enthusiastic about the new building however. Historic England, the organisation responsible for conserving historic environments, said “a building of this scale in this location threatens harm to listed buildings, registered historic parks and conservation areas.”
Work on the building has begun, and it is expected to open in 2019.
