French Bulldogs are now in the running to become the U.K.’s most popular dog, but due to overbreeding, these dogs are experiencing medical problems as there has been an increase in illegal puppy farms.

The British Veterinary Association issued a direst statement about French Bulldogs:

“Vets have long been concerned about the rising popularity of brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, including French bulldogs.

The health issues with brachycephalic breeds have become more prominent as the breed has grown so rapidly in popularity over the last few years. People are often drawn to the more desirable “squishy” faced dogs, pushing up their popularity over those dogs of the same breed with less exaggerated faces. However, often, the more exaggerated the conformation of the dog’s face, the more health implications, such as difficulty breathing, skin irritations and eye problems.”

Some blame celebrities and social media stars for glamorizing the breed while others claim their cute faces are the reason for the boom in the breed and French Bulldog merchandise.

With a nice family and loving home, French Bulldogs make great companions.
