Wellcome Collection launches major new exhibition on the theme of electricity
The Wellcome Collection has launched a major new exhibition in conjunction with Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry and Teylers Museum in the Netherlands.
Over one hundred objects and images charting the history of electricity are on display, including designs for the UK’s first electricity pylons and experimental equipment.
Co-curator Ruth Garde told City News that “the exhibition is a journey through humankind’s relationships with electricity… we’re looking at the social, the scientific, the cultural relationships we have formed with electricity and how electricity has shaped our lives from a number of different perspectives.”
There are also three new commissions by international artists, including the filmmaker Bill Morrison. He said that “electricity as subject matter has always interested me… because we are inherently electrical beings and we generate electricity. It’s something that I’m interested in as an artist and as a human being.”
Electricity: the Spark of Life runs from February 23rd to June 25th and is accompanied by a programme of events at the musueum.
