DJ Ben Rymer, who performed at Bestival this year, won’t have to repay the loan until profits in excess of £50,000 are made.
His restaurant, Chicken Town, is in a former fire station in Tottenham and was labelled Britain’s healthiest fried chicken shop in 2015.
The restaurant is known for its free-range chicken that has a fraction of the fat and salt found in other fried chicken.
The healthy image helped gather support for a Kickstarter campaign to launch the shop in 2015. Health campaigners have been supportive of the shop.
While the shop runs on a not-for-profit basis, local chicken shop owners are angry over the Council’s investment.
According to the business’s rivals, the Chicken Town remains shut too many days of the week in order to achieve the required profit.
Additionally, they accuse the owner of living in Philippines where it is claimed ‘he surfs all the time.’
John O’Connell , from the Taxpayers’ Alliance said that it is ‘unfair on other restaurant owners in the area who have gone to the bank to get their businesses off the ground.’
Chicken Town, is not only known as a non-profit organisation, as it also provides job opportunities for unemployed young people in the area, such as training for cooks and waiters.
