Halloween has become the 3rd most popular commercial holiday after Christmas and Easter. Over 15 million pumpkins are purchased for the celebration and at the end 8,000 tonnes of edible pumpkins end up in the bin each year. That’s the same weight as 1,500 double decker buses! The Pumpkin Rescue supported by Hubbub uses everyone’s favourite spooky staple as a prop to talk about the edible food we throw away and the easy steps we can take to make the most of it instead. It’s a celebration of food that challenges preconceptions, teaches new skills and has some fun along the way.
The Dalston Eastern Curve Garden have also started an to encourage Londoners to recycle their pumpkins after Halloween by encouraging locals to bring the pumpkins after Halloween and turn their pumpkins into compost to be used in the garden the year after.
