Spitalfields bosses want to extend the markets drinking license in order to serve alcohol at the 17th century market later into the evening.

The owners want some stalls to be able to sell alcohol seven days a week until 9pm, two hours later than the current time allowed.

The bosses also want to host sports matches and screen films and concerts in the extended drinking time.

In an application to Tower Hamlets Council, Aidan Brooks, owner of Old Spitafields Market, said that extended hours help create London’s very best market and retail destination.

However, residents are concerned that later drinking hours may create chaos if revellers stay in the area later.

The City of London Corporation owns the freehold to the renovated site, which has been released to Mr. Brooks since 2015.
