The Grade II listed bridge has been closed several times in recent years. And over the next week there are more closures to come.
These closures follow on from those at Christmas and will allow workmen to assess the condition of the structure ahead of major refurbishment later this year.
Both traffic lanes will be closed each day this weekend from 8am-6pm. The northbound lane will close from Tuesday 13th February to Friday 16th February, also at 8am- 6pm. Full closure will happen again the following weekend.
Hammersmith and Fulham Council look after the bridge, and say they have chosen half term for closures because they want to minimise disruption.
Road users will have to use Putney Bridge or Chiswick Bridge which are both two and a half miles either side.
Several bus routes across the river will also be affected.
Transport for London say that they will run buses on diversion throughout the closures.
There’s no doubt that it is in need of desperate repair as the road surface is bumpy and the structure is rusty.
But it’s also clear that this will cause travel disruption and road users who need the route will be getting weary.
Major works are expected to start in late 2018.
Background to the Bridge
The Bridge was built in 1887. It has a very high traffic volume for its age, with more than 20,000 vehicles crossing it every day.
Hammersmith and Fulham council say it was never designed to carry this volume and weight of traffic.
It currently has a 7.5 tonne weight restriction, with priority for single-decker buses and emergency vehicles.
The council say that major intervention is necessary and it is now time to have a full refurbishment.
This will include strengthening and a full resurfacing that will last for many years.
