Consultation on the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) aimed at reducing air pollution has ended. Now Hackney and Islington councils will begin the roll out process for the scheme.
The councils of Hackney and Islington joined forces to create the Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN), and are working together using financing from the mayor of London’s air quality fund to put the scheme together.
The air quality fund is a £20 million fund over 10 years to support new projects by London boroughs to improve air quality.
In a bid to create clean air zones the council plans to ban all petrol, diesel and old hybrid vechiles from entering nine central streets during rush hour, 7.00-10.00 and 16.00-19.00 Monday-Friday.
According to local councillor Freyal Demirici, Hackney and in particular Shoreditch suffer from the worst air in London.
City news spoke to Patrick Donely who works for the Hackney Service Centre told us that the scheme aims to “encourage the upkeep of electric vehicles and low emission vehicles.”
