The event has been made possible with the collaboration of the Mayor of Camden, Cllr Richard Cotton, who has nominated proceeds to be donated to homeless charity C4WS.
The Mayor told City News, “the reason I chose C4WS is because I’m, like everybody, really concerned about the number of people you nee around the borough sleeping rough.”
“It just shocks me that in a country that’s the fifth or sixth richest on Earth there are still people who are so poor that they’re forced to sleep on the streets.”
“The pancake race is a fundraising event – we’ve had a number of them already this year. I turned my birthday into a fundraising event. Anything that can help raise money we’re supporting. ”
C4WS Homeless Project is a grassroots charity that assist homeless people all year round, helping them to rebuild their lives.
The charity opened for the first time in January 2005, when a group of seven churches took it in turns to provide free shelter and food for thirteen of the coldest weeks of the year.
Since then they have expanded the shelters to support more people in crisis and evolved its services to become a project that combines this continued support with real, long-term change.
The charity is managed by just three permanent members of staff, plus the support of over six hundred volunteers.
A total of 4751 people were counted or estimated by local authorities to be sleeping rough in England on any one night in Autumn 2017, representing a 15% increase from the 2016 figure of 4134.
Camden reported large increases in the number of rough sleepers, being the local authority with the third highest number of rough sleepers. It did not appear in the top ten in 2016.
To take part in the race, teams must consist of four people, running in relay.
There is a £10 per team entry free, all of which will be donated to C4WS.
