Bethnal Greens Gardens' date back to the 17th Century.

The gardens adjacent to the library are in great need of attention as well according to the petitioners.

Bethnal Green Gardens’ history date back to the 17th century and is arguably one of London’s oldest gardens. In 1985 the park areas were made ornamental.

Today the area of open land is occupied by the library, the Museum of Childhood, and St. John’s Church. There is also a famous World War II memorial.

Geoffrey Juden is one of the leaders of the East London Garden Society, an interest group aiming to save and conserve green spaces located in East London.

Mr. Juden told City News that, ‘We’re hoping that Mr. Biggs will make sure that this historic conservation area is maintained to a high standard, giving the area the respect it most certainly deserves.’

‘One would hope that a local authority would care better for its history. I remember Mayor Biggs saying that such a historic building should not be neglected,’ he added.

City News reached out to the Tower Hamlets Mayor for a comment, however, a reply had not been provided at the time of publication.

The petition is open and will require a minimum of 500 signatures.
