A 48-year-old woman has pleaded guilty at Westminster Magistrates Court, confessing to the theft of multiple items from the Superdry store on Regent Street.
The court heard that the defendant, Laura Bingland, moved towards the winter-wear section on 19 November, where she picked three coats off a railing, their total worth more than £400.
The prosecution described how Ms Bingland proceeded to pack the coats into a large bag which she had brought in with her.
The CCTV operator on duty noticed the defendant’s suspicious behaviour and she was promptly detained by security staff in the store.
The goods were recovered at the scene, undamaged and in a resalable condition.
Ms Bingland’s advocate pleaded with the bench to be lenient.
The barrister argued her client had “fallen on hard times”, “wasn’t thinking properly” and had been left effectively homeless.
The bench accepted these points but appeared unimpressed with the argument that the defendant had been merely “opportunistic” and needed a coat to keep warm.
The magistrate asked why if Ms Bingland was being “opportunistic”, she had taken three coats instead of one.
The fact that the defendant also carried in a large bag with her gave the impression the theft was premeditated.
She was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment.
No costs were issued.
