Two dogs have been seen locked in cages at Chanel's Sloan Street store.

Fashion brand Chanel has faced questions over its treatment of animals following a video showing caged security dogs inside one of its London stores.

Made in Chelsea star Tabitha Willett, posted the video on her Instagram.

It showed two dogs locked in steel cages inside Chanel’s Sloan Square store.

The reality star, who has 14,000 Instagram followers, can be heard saying in the clip “why are two dogs sleeping in Chanel tonight?”

“The crates they were in looked far too small”

In her first interview since she posted the video, Ms Willett told City News she was shocked at the way the French fashion house was treating the canines.

“They were both very big dogs.  The crates they were in looked far too small,” she says.

Dogs for security

Ms Willett claims that she contacted the store. She told City News a shop assistant told the dogs were there for security purposes after the store experienced some recent late-night incidents.

“One of the dogs was wagging its tail, which is very sweet, but not terribly scary if the security of the store was their main concern.

“They were locked in crates, which is the most ridiculous thing completed because Chanel has said the dogs were there to protect the store,” she said.

PETA speaks out

Jennifer White is from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). She said that companies like Chanel have the resources for more advanced ways of protecting their good.

“We were shocked when we saw the video footage. Dogs deserve better than to be locked in tiny crates and used as a cheap bugler alarm. There’s just no need for it.” she said.

“It looks like animal cruelty, and people are outraged. Chanel is such an amazing brand, its top of its game. It’s really disappointing this happened. I think it tarnishes the brand,” Ms Willet said.

In a statement, Chanel said it was now seeking the services of a dog handler.

“We understand the concern of those who care about animal welfare and we share it,” the statement read.

“We want to assure them that these two dogs, which are specially trained for this purpose, are released from their crates on a regular-basis to stretch and exercise and there is a regular supply of food and water throughout the duration of their time in the boutique.’
