What is a megacity and where does London rank as one of the world’s best?
As part of Clerkenwell Design Week, City, University of London is hosting an event tackling the question, and what megacities will look like in 2020.
The event brings together the minds and leaders behind some of the world’s most successful megacities.
Speaking will be former Barcelona Mayor Dr Joan Clos and City’s design and technology dean professor, Kevin Hom.
Also speaking is Professor Rajkumar Roy, Dean of School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering at City.
He spoke to City News about the University’s involvement in this year’s CDW and London’s role as a megacity.
CN: So what is a megacity?
RR: “A megacity is essentially a very large and fast-growing city around the world.”
CN: So how does London rank against other megacities, like Barcelona and New York?
RR: “London is already a great megacity, so is New York and Barcelona is catching up.
“London has history, a cosmopolitan nature, a great buzz and global thought leadership in how megacities should be in the future.”

“I think it’s about technology, culture, lifestyle and innovating new ideas.
“London has that and it’s what separates itself from other megacities.”
CN: And how can London continue to innovate and lead as a megacity?
RR: “I think it’s all about innovation.
“London has to continue to lead in innovating new ideas, like tunnelling technologies and cybersecurity.
“It’s about the mobility of people in these big cities, so next-gen technology like 5G will play a huge part in the innovation we need to bring.”
