Layla Moran, the Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon gave an interview to The Times this week in which she spoke of her regret at assaulting her then-partner in 2013.

The article has sparked debate about male victims of domestic abuse.

According to ManKind, a domestic violence charity for men suffering from domestic abuse, 15% of men and 26% of women and aged 16 to 59 had experienced some form of domestic abuse since the age of 16.

This is the equivalent to an estimated 2.4 million male victims and 4.3 million female.

Figures by ManKind state that for every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be female, one will be male.

One in four women and one in six to seven men suffer from domestic abuse in their lifetime.

‘Zero-tolerance policy’

Ms Moran and Richard Davis were arrested on 14 September at a hotel in Sauchiehall Street.

They were detained in police custody in connection with assault and breach of the peace, according to Police Scotland.

The MP wrote:

“I was initially charged in line with the zero-tolerance policy but then the charges were dropped and there was no case to answer.”
