Islington Council is seeking to expand an energy scheme that pumps out heat out of Northern Line tunnels and uses it to heat properties.
Burnhill Energy Centre 3, as the scheme is known, would supply power to more than 1,000 homes and businesses in Islington.
The scheme would pump wasted heat from a ventilation shaft in the Northern line and use it to generate electricity and heating water.
Two similar systems are already in place, supplying power to 800 homes in Islington.
Labour Cllr Claudia Webbe, Islington Council’s environment cheif argues that “it could benefit a lot more people because there is no reason people should be in fuel poverty”.
“They simply cannot afford their bills and have to make a choice between heating and eating.”
A TfL spokesperson said that “this is the first scheme of its kind in Europe”.
The Greater London Authority (GLA) says that the heat wasted in the tube could meet up to 38% of heating demand in the city.
