Despite a raft of new measures introduced in today’s Autumn Budget, critics have noted that the government has failed to mention any plans to support the plant-based meat substitute industry.
We spoke to Jenny Jones, Green Party member, who called the government’s current stance ‘ridiculous’ and ‘essential we speed up this shift in lifestyle’ as the food form widely recognised as being more ecologically-friendly than meat was omitted from any budgetary plans.
It comes just days before the UK hosts the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, where the government will further outline their plans for a green future for Britain.
New figures published today by Changing Markets show livestock generates 32% of methane.
Along with he Social Market Foundation’s report published last month shows that for the government to meet their net zero target, meat consumption must fall rapidly.

With these figures in mind, it is no surprise that ahead of next week’s summit there have been protests around the country, including ‘Animal Rebellion‘ who were climbing the government building of the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on Tuesday.
In an interview with their spokesman, Nathan, he said ‘(they are) demanding the British government defunds the agricultural industry and puts the 1.5 billion per year into sustainable plant-based options.’
Animal Rebellion have developed a large social media following in the plant-based community.
Nathan told us he thinks the government is ignoring this issue because of how heavily subsidized this industry is.
Nathan’s response contrasts with an interview we had with a butcher in Islington, although they had one significant opinion in common – both are frustrated with the government investing into big supermarkets and factory farms.

The butcher claims, ‘supermarkets have changed things… (and he’s) never had any help from the government… who are only interested in big businesses’.
When asked what he thinks about plant-based investment he says ‘People are never going to stop eating meat, it’s been a stable diet for thousands of years.. animals are bred for human consumption.’
In our twitter poll, although they may not be climbing government buildings themselves, most people seem to agree with the activists motives.
