The Morning Lane People’s Space has exceeded its crowdfunding target of £994, raising over £1,180. The Council bought the Hackney Central site in 2017 for £60million to ensure it had more control over what could be built in the key town centre location. It signed an agreement with Hackney Walk Ltd to develop the land into offices, housing, and shops – as well as a smaller Tesco superstore.

Why have residents created a Crowdfunding page?
Hackney residents strongly oppose these proposals and are campaigning for an alternative plan based on real consultation with people who live, shop and work locally. The proposed development suggests 500 houses will be built, with none being social housing. This comes at the time where Hackney’s social housing crisis exceeds 13,000, with 4,700 needing urgent housing. Hackney Walk Ltd is responsible for the Fashion Hub, with then London Mayor Boris Johnson’s public backing. The retail development on Morning Lane has come under fire from opposition groups as it is filled with empty shops and inaccessible luxury brands. Many residents worry that this newest development could have the same impact as the last.

A spokesperson for the Morning Lane People’s Space wants more communication with the council over their demands and to reconsider the development.

Where will the Crowdfunded money go?
The Crowdfunded page closed donations early this morning. Morning Lane People’s Space pledge to use the money to print promotional leaflets for protest stalls, hold a public meeting, and create a professional video about the proposed development on Morning Lane in Hackney.
The council is now looking for other options as Hackney Walk Ltd has not submitted a planning application. The deadline for their submission is March 2022 and Hackney Walk Ltd still has the right to submit a planning application to the Council.
