Battersea and Wandsworth Trades Union Council (BWTUC) have launched a campaign for clean air in Tooting Market. This is after findings that pollution levels from cooking in the market are “very high” and exceed those on the main road.

In partnership with Trade Union Clean Air Network, the campaign is a photo-call as part of the TUC Hearts Union week.

Graham Petersen from BWTUC said they have “been monitoring pollution levels and reviewing solutions”. He stressed that “measures need to be put in place to reduce the risk to workers and the public”.

Tooting Broadway market was established in 1936 and is one of South London’s oldest markets, selling food, drinks, groceries, homeware, clothes and more.

Councillor Jamie Colclough, LB Wandsworth Clean Air Champion, said “the markets in Tooting are a great retail and entertainment space. They provide jobs, opportunities for small independent businesses and have helped put Tooting on the map as an important night-time attraction”.

But he also expressed concern for the clean air standards, saying: “a good night out should also be a healthy night out, so Wandsworth Council has offered to work with the markets, looking to access grant money to raise clean air standards”.
