The report, published today by The Sports People’s Think Tank, state that UK football coaches from black and ethnic minority backgrounds still face “institutionally embedded barriers.”
Working with Loughborough University and the anti-discrimination group Fare (Football Against Racism in Football), SPTT looked at six positions in football, from first-team manager to lead coach of the under-18s.
In 2003 the NFL introduced the “Rooney Rule,” named after the former American Football club owner Dan Rooney, which demands that at least one ethnic minority candidate be interviewed for each senior coaching position.
Whilst the English Football League made it mandatory for clubs to interview a BAME candidate for academy jobs in 2016, the rule did not include first-team roles.
STTP wants to change this.
This year all clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two have now signed up to extend the trial to cover first-team vacancies.
STTP’s research does not include the recent appointments of Northampton’s Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Chesterfield’s Jack Lester, Carlisle’s Keith Curle, Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton’s Chris Hughton.
They bring the number of BAME managers in the 92 clubs to five.
Considering that the majority of UK coaches are former players and that BAME players make up nearly a third of all squads, the report concluded that “institutionally embedded barriers which have restricted opportunities for BAME coaches in the past, remain firmly in place”.
