Former super-middleweight world champion James DeGale has announced his retirement from boxing after a losing to Chris Eubank Jr.
DeGale, 33, made the statement 10 years after his first professional fight in 2009.
He said, “It’s been an unbelievable journey and I’ve had an amazing decade- if I’m honest, the best years of my life.”
“Having started boxing at the age of nine then being selected as part of the England amateurs squad, I’ve collected many memories along the way.”
He said that he is “touched to have a good send-off from the fans in my home city.”
He was born in Hammersmith, West London.
The Olympic gold medallist won 25 out of his 29 competitive bouts.
DeGale thanked his former coach and boxing champion, Jim McDonnell. He said they would be “friends and family for life.”
DeGale held the IBF World Title on two occasions. Eubank Jr., a fellow Brit, now has his sights on a World Title Fight.
