England rugby captain and Saracens player Owen Farrell believes the proposed World Rugby changes will be harmful to players.

The international governing body for the sport wants to introduce a 12 team world league from 2020.

There are unconfirmed reports a broadcaster has tabled a proposal for television rights. The deal is rumoured to be worth up to £7 million.

The league will feature countries involved in the Six Nations; England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Italy.

The league will include former world champions New Zealand, Australia and South Africa as well as the upcoming sides of Argentina, the United States and Japan.

Farrell calls the proposal “a difficult situation”.

He says that whatever happens, World Rugby must “reduce conflict, deal with player related issues and make sure their welfare is the priority”.

He adds, “the proposal doesn’t seem to have considered this properly”.

World Rugby says they are surprised by this opposition, and believe assumptions made by players “are inaccurate”.
