NFL have today launched a London initiative to ‘transform lives with Sport’.
The new NFL academy, supported by Spurs, will give students the possibility of prestigious football scholarships afterwards.
Alistair Kirkwood is the managing director of NFL UK and wrote in the Evening Standard:
“At the NFL, we believe in these young people and we recognise their strengths. Therefore, we’re launching the NFL Academy at Barnet and Southgate College in September and offering a springboard of opportunity.
“I’m a firm believer in using the power of sport for good and I’m hugely excited about the prospect of transforming individuals’ lives and giving them the chance to achieve incredible things.
Mr Kirkwood added that young people are misrepresented:
“Every day we hear negative stories about teenagers in London, who are too often castigated either for being lazy or involved in anti-social behaviour.
“Such portrayals are unrepresentative of a generation that wants to make a difference and simply needs more opportunities.”

“In our new partnership with Tottenham Hotspur, we have looked at ways to create something meaningful and year-round in the community,” said Alistair Kirkwood.
Spurs have famously built an NFL pitch at their new stadium, to bring the excitement of American league football to London.
The stadium features a retractable grass field with an artificial surface underneath that will be used for NFL games, as well as other customised designs for the NFL including a dedicated entrance, purpose-built dressing rooms and specialist medical and media facilities.
The two confirmed NFL matches are confirmed for October 2019.
Speaking of the responsibility of football to the wider community, Spurs executive director told City Radio:
“As a London club we have a moral social responsibility to those around us, this partnership with NFL will continue to support young people in Tottenham and elsewhere in London.
“I like to think of the new stadium as a beacon of hope for young people, and a catalyst for positive community development.”
