The Judge ruled that the incident was an accident, having received a statement from the bus driver and seen CCTV footage.

Today, the final hearing saw the collision ruled accidental.

The inquest originally opened on 31 July but was adjourned. Today’s case was heard in the Poplars Coroners Court, Tower Hamlets. In contrast to Courts like the Magistrate’s or Supreme Court, Coroner’s are Courts of record, not adversary process.

The Judge ruled that the incident was an accident, having received a statement from the bus driver and seen CCTV footage.

The bus driver, Dean Baxter, has been suffering from stress and depression following the incident. He was therefore unable to attend the hearing today to provide evidence.

Instead, the judge read a statement from the driver and pieces of CCTV footage of the incident was shown in Court. Videos from the local authority and two bus cameras showed the woman stepping out in front of the bus without looking.

A paramedic who attended the scene said Mrs Stante stated that ‘she checked the road in the wrong direction before stepping out in front of the bus’.

The judge is definitely going to rule it an accident. Bus driver not to blame as he was only going at 16mph in a 30mph zone. Confusing junction, woman didn’t look both ways when she crossed the street
